The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre recently revealed a surprise quirk.

While speaking on a panel at the Warner Bros. Television Press Day in Burbank, Calif., on Jan. 30, the writer and producer shared that he has one specific superstition when it comes to his career.

“A long time ago, I picked up a ridiculous neurosis that I have. It’s contagious. It has spread. And for some reason, I cannot sit in a chair with my name on it,” Lorre, 72, told the audience. ”Can’t defend it, but things are working okay, so I’m going to stick with it.”

Lorre’s chair superstition seems to have served him well, as the Emmy winner has created such beloved and long-running shows as Dharma & Greg, Two and a Half Men, Mike & Molly and Mom.

In another portion of the conversation, Lorre revealed that he approaches his work with a singular goal: to make people laugh.

“I think I keep it really simple,” he explained. “My job, my hope and goals are to cause laughter. That’s it. I’m not a teacher. I’m not an educator. And a successful day when you go home is: People laughed. That was a good day. That was a good day. … And that’s the goal. To go beyond that, I think, might be a bit of, a bit of hubris, I believe.”

And in terms of knowing whether or not he’s creating something that will resonate with viewers?

“I think there’s no formula for this other than trust your own response. My own response,” he said.

He continued: “If I think something is worth writing about or characters are really interesting or wonderful or terrible people, but wonderful, terrible people, then trust, trust that feeling. Because there’s no way to canvas the world and find out, ‘Do you agree with me?’ So you just go forward on faith.”

Lorre was at the Warner Bros. event to promote his latest CBS show, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, starring Montana Jordan and Emily Osment. The series, which is a spinoff of Young Sheldon, premiered in October 2024 and is the third series in The Big Bang Theory franchise.

The show follows the character of Sheldon’s older brother, Georgie Cooper (Jordan), as he goes through the trials and tribulations of parenthood and young family life with Mandy (Osment).

While discussing potential plotlines for the new show — and how they may tie into other characters and events in Big Bang Theory canon — Lorre said there is a world of opportunities.

“We stand on many, many years of wonderful characters in both The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon. So we have an embarrassment of riches to draw from,” he said.

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage airs Thursdays on CBS at 8 p.m. ET.
