A British paralympian has been reported missing in Las Vegas.

According to the BBC, Sam Ruddock was last heard from on April 16 after traveling to the United States to watch a WrestleMania event.

Ruddock, who is from Rugby in Warwickshire and has competed in cycling, shotput and sprinting events, had arrived in the U.S. on April 13, according to Sky News and British newspaper The Independent.

His friend Lucy Hatton told the BBC, that while his disappearance was “really, really out of character,” he had not “been in quite the right head space” lately.

She told the outlet that Las Vegas police were aware of Ruddock’s disappearance and were treating him as a missing person.

Lincolnshire Police also confirmed to PEOPLE that they have an active missing person investigation for Ruddock.

PEOPLE has contacted the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, British Cycling and WrestleMania for comment but did not immediately hear back.

Hatton told the BBC that her friend, who has cerebral palsy, was a “fantastic human being” and loved going to schools to “inspire the next generation”.

She revealed she was the one who drove him to the airport on April 13. Hatton also knew that he would be staying in a hostel when he arrived in Las Vegas.

“He flew on the 13th, I’ve got confirmation that he landed, I absolutely know Sam was in Vegas, the concerning part is he went silent from the 16th and because he is such a big presence on social media, people were quite fast to notice,” she said, per Sky News.

Ruddock’s last post on Instagram was shared on April 16. The post featured a video of himself appearing to tour Las Vegas.

According to the BBC, Ruddock’s mother, Fran Ruddock, and Hatton tracked down the hostel he was staying in, and were told the paralympian had not checked out when he was due to or taken his belongings.

Fran from Lincoln said she normally spoke to her son every day, adding that he was “very sociable.”

She asked anyone with information in the U.K. or the United States to get in touch.

“Anything at all to piece together the gaps,” she said, per BBC.

Ruddock competed for Great Britain in the 2012 and 2016 Paralympic Games, with a British Cycling spokesperson telling Sky News, “We urge anyone who has been in contact with Sam since April 16 or may have any information of his whereabouts to contact their local police department as soon as possible.”
