Landscaper Dies After a Lawnmower Fell on Him at Texas College

Officials said a landscaper died in an accident involving a lawnmower at a Texas college earlier this week. 

In an email shared with PEOPLE on Wednesday, March 5, the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) said its officers responded to Northwest Vista College in San Antonio on the morning of Monday, March 3. 

“With information gathered at the scene, it appears that the subject had driven the lawn mower over a ledge,” said the SAPD. “The subject fell off the lawn mower into the drainage ditch and the mower had fallen on top of the subject.”

Before the officers’ arrival, emergency responders at the scene had already removed the mower from the man and tried to save him, the SAPD said.

“Despite EMS lifesaving attempts, the subject was pronounced deceased at 09:35,” said police.

Authorities said the manner of death was ruled an accident and no foul play was suspected. 

Alamo Colleges said the machine was a commercial lawnmower that a person rides on rather than one that is pushed manually, CBS affiliate KENS reported.

The victim was later identified as Jorge Gonzales, 55, according to a spokesperson for Northwest Vista College and the Alamo Colleges District in a statement to PEOPLE.

“At approximately 9:30 a.m. on Monday, March 3, a groundskeeping contractor passed away following an accident on the Northwest Vista College campus,” wrote the spokesperson.  

“Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. Counseling services are available for employees and students who need support,” the statement later added.

The school is a community college, opened in 1994 and its current student enrollment exceeds 16,000, according to its website.
