Jack Schlossberg Returns to Social Media After DOGE Closes JFK’s Presidential Library

Jack Schlossberg has returned to social media amid the temporary closure of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum.

Schlossberg, who is the only grandson of former President John F. Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy Onassis, made his return to social media after claiming that he was deleting social media “forever” on Feb. 6.

He ended his brief hiatus by sharing an announcement the JFK Library Foundation posted on its social media pages on Tuesday, Feb. 18, indicating that the library was closed until “further notice.”

“STEALING HISTORY from the PEOPLE — our government is using PROPAGANDA TO CHANGE THE PAST — Today DOGE [Department of Government Efficiency] SHUT DOWN the JFK LIBRARY — welcomes thousands of students ever year to learn about US HISTORY — the DIRECTOR OF PRES. LIBRARIES (from White House / DOGE) instructed the JFKLIBRARY to fire probationary staff effective immediately and until further notice,” Schlossberg wrote in the caption.

DOGE, led by Elon Musk, was established by orders from Pesident Donald Trump to “[modernize] Federal technology and software to maximize governmental efficiency and productivity.” The organization has reportedly been accessing sensitive government information and private details about millions of Americans.

In a follow-up video, Schlossberg said he believed the shutdown “has nothing to do with government efficiency.”

“The workers who were fired today actually bring in revenue for the government. It’s really about stealing the past and about generating propaganda so that people don’t know what’s really happening,” he said.

According to CBS Boston, the library closed on Tuesday due to an executive order by Trump. The foundation confirmed to PEOPLE that doors were locked at 2:00 p.m. local time.

A sign posted on the door of the library said “Due to an Executive Order concerning a ‘reduction in force (RIF),’ the JFK Library and Museum will be closed to the public until further notice,” per CBS Boston.

According to WCVB-TV, before the closure, there was a meeting where several employees were laid off.

“From my understanding, leadership at the John F. Kennedy Library today received a communication from the leadership at the National Archives that oversees the library that was effectuating an order from the administration to terminate all as they call it probationary employees which are folks that essentially have been hired there within the past year,” Joe Kennedy III told CBS Boston.

The JFK Library Foundation shared in a statement to PEOPLE that “the sudden dismissal of federal employees at the JFK Library forced the museum to close today.”

“As the Foundation that supports the JFK Library, we are devastated by this news and will continue to support our colleagues and the Library,” the statement continued.

The library is set to open its doors again on Wednesday, Feb. 19. PEOPLE has reached out to National Archives and Records Administration for comment.
